Photo Realism
PHOTO REALISM DEFINITION FROM INTERNET:
a style of art and sculpture characterized by the highly detailed depiction of ordinary life with the impersonality of a photograph.
Example of Photo Realism - The Last of Us
This artistic style is appropriate for The Last Of Us because users will want to be engaged in the apocalyptic world.
Photo realism is appropriate to achieve this objective because the characters in the game will look like real people, as do the buildings also look real. This will make the game seem more realistic than other artistic styles because it will enable the user to be more engaged with the game.
The mood that is created in the pictures below seems very dull , therefore is appropriate to portray a zombie apocalyptic world.

Pixel Art
PIXEL ART DEFINITION FROM INTERNET:
a form of digital art, created through the use of raster graphics software, where images are edited on the pixel level.
Example of Pixel Art - Super Mario Bros
Pixel Art is a suitable artistic style to use for a game like Super Mario Bros is because it is side- scrolling platform game, therefore as it is 2D, high resolution graphics would not be suitable to portray a platform game like this. As a result , pixel art is used instead , because it is simple to make. As well as this, the game was released on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) which means the machine couldn't handle high resolution graphics anyway.
The mood that is created in the pictures above seems to be retro-like, as older game machines could only handle pixels and not high resolution graphics as most game machines can today. Some game developers still use pixel art today, because some people like it and it reminds them of the games they used to play.

Abstraction
ABSTRACTION DEFINITION FROM INTERNET:
a form of digital art that breaks away from traditional representation of physical objects. It explores the relationships of forms and colors, whereas more traditional art represents the world in recognizable images.
Example of Abstraction - Pac-Man
Abstraction is used in Pac-Man. This is because Pac-Man is an arcade game where you play as a sprite, who travels around a maze collecting 'power ups' avoiding the ghosts. Abstraction is used in Pac-Man because the game contains shapes, bright colours etc.
Therefore, Pac-Man relies on basic shapes rather than defined objects and characters.

Exaggeration
EXAGGERATION DEFINITION :
a style of art that exaggerates features in a game such as; hair, nose, eyes etc.
Example of Exaggeration - Batman: Arkham Knight
 Batman is an example of exaggeration as Batman's character has lots of muscle which is a highly exaggerated feature. As well as this, his vehicle is also highly exaggerated because the concept of the vehicle is very unrealistic. However, this makes the game more interesting as it is unusual. However, other cars and characters in the game are realistic so the game is a mixture of exaggeration and photo realism.
